Set up an iPad wall display

A shared display opens your system without an account sign-in. Use Safari; there is no separate app to install from the App Store.

1. Create a display link

As the system owner or a household manager, open Manage → Displays and choose Add display. Give it a name, choose View only or View and control, then set its theme, standard layout and language.

Choose Create link. The URL and QR code are shown once. Scan them now or keep the link somewhere private; the QR code contains the same access secret as the URL.

2. Add it to the Home Screen

Keep the iPad connected to the internet. Menu wording can vary with the iPadOS version.

  • Scan the QR code with the iPad camera and open the link in Safari.
  • In Safari, tap Share, then Add to Home Screen, and confirm the name.
  • Open the new Home Screen icon to use the display without Safari's usual browser controls.

3. Set screen behaviour on the iPad

In iPad Settings → Display & Brightness → Auto-Lock, choose a duration that suits the display, or Never if available. Managed devices and power-saving settings may restrict that choice.

For a dedicated tablet, configure Guided Access under Settings → Accessibility. Set a passcode and learn how to end the session before leaving the tablet mounted. Review the Guided Access display-lock setting as well.

Hydrum's appearance or dimming settings do not control the iPad's system brightness or guarantee that its screen stays awake. Set brightness, power and locking on the device itself.

4. Give the link only the access it needs

Anyone with the link can use its permission, even on another device. View only reveals temperatures and system status. View and control can also change available room setpoints, timers and the operating mode while the controller is connected.

A display link does not grant household management, account settings, history or personal alerts. It cannot create a timed-away return. For a shared hallway or guest-facing screen, prefer View only.

Personal widgets need a signed-in account

Shared displays use Rail, Poster or Mosaic. The custom widget editor and room favourites belong to a signed-in account and system; display links do not inherit them.

You can open your personal wall while signed in, but that leaves the account's access available on the tablet. Use a display link when you want a separate, limited permission instead.

Pause or revoke a display

Manage the link under Manage → Displays from an account with management access.

  • Pause stops access to readings and controls. Resume allows the same link to work again when the tablet can reconnect.
  • Replace link invalidates the old URL. Open the new link on the tablet and replace its Home Screen shortcut.
  • Delete removes the display and revokes its link. Replace or delete a link if it has escaped your control.
  • During a controller outage, last-known readings are marked as old and controls are disabled. Check the connection rather than repeatedly sending a change.
